Fitting Spatial Ability into Intelligent Tutoring Systems Development

چکیده
Building effective learning environments is an art that can only be perfected by a great deal of explorations involving the environments’ audience: the learners. This paper focuses on taking into account the learners’ spatial ability into the development of Intelligent Tutoring Systems. We modified ERM-Tutor, a constraint-based tutor that teaches logical database design, to provide not only textual feedback messages, but also messages containing combinations of text and pictures, in accordance with the multimedia theory of learning [1]. Results of a preliminary study performed show a promising indication for further explorations. We plan to use these results as the basis for another evaluation study in early 2007.

Atomic and Molecular Intelligent Tutoring Systems A new architecture for intelligent and interoperable open educational resources
Due to interoperability issues, Intelligent Tutoring Systems are hard to deploy in the different educational platforms available nowadays. This represents a considerable limitation, since tutoring systems require substantial time and a lot of resources to be implemented. This paper describes a new architecture for developing open source and interoperable intelligent tutors. In our approach, “at...
متن کاملInvestigating the Relationship between Spatial Ability and Feedback Style in ITSs
Rapid and widespread development of computerised learning tools have proven the need for further exploration of the learners’ personal characteristics in order to maximise the use of the current technology. In particular, this paper looks at the potential of accounting for spatial ability in ERM-Tutor; a constraint-based tutor that teaches logical database design. Our evaluation study shows no ...
متن کاملFacial Expression Analysis for Estimating Learner?s Emotional State in Intelligent Tutoring Systems
Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) provide individualized instruction. They offer many advantages over the traditional classroom scenario: they are always available, non-judgmental and provide tailored feedback resulting in increased and effective learning. However, they are still not as effective as one-on-one human tutoring. The next generation of intelligent tutors is expected to be able to ...
متن کاملMultimodal Intelligent Tutoring Systems
Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS), also known as Intelligent E-learning Systems, is the task of providing individualized instruction, by being able to adapt to the knowledge, learning abilities and needs of each individual student. The offer of the ITS is increasing at an unrestrainable pace (Butz & Hua, 2006; Chen, 2008; Reategui & Boff, 2008; Roger, 2006). The “intelligence” in these systems...
متن کاملMotivation and Evolutionary Pedagogical Agents
Motivating students is a major issue for current Intelligent Tutoring Systems. Modern theories of motivation (such as the Self Determination Theory) have shown the positive motivational impact of autonomysupport. Following this idea, we have proposed in a previous work an autonomy-supportive motivational design for eLearning systems. Later, the importance to take learner’s culture into account ...
